This time of year I look forward to decorating our Christmas tree and the best part is the smell of the real tree every time you enter the room.

I believe an inspiring leader is like being a tree - as the leader you are the main trunk and support for your team! Your team are the leaves!

A tree needs nutrients to keep it flourishing. These nutrients need to be provided continuously for the tree to stay strong and grow. One of the most important nutrients is communication.

Communication is two-way - you are communicating to your team about what is important every day but you are also asking them regularly two questions:

1. What they want more of from you?

2. What they want more of from their work?

The key is to really listen to what they say and then, action it. Some things may 'quick wins' and really easy to fix. If there's something you can't do, explain why you can't. At least your team will know you have listened to them and that you care!

Communication is the key to the whole team and organisation performing well, you have to lead on it every day.

The 4 rules of communication are:

1. Consistent

2. Constant

3. Clear

4. Concise

My question to you this month is 'What can you do as leader to improve the communication in your team and provide those nutrients to your leaves'?
