How much do you delegate to your team?
Delegation is an important and powerful leadership skill because:
š it empowers your team to make their own decisions
š it gives them confidence
š it is a great learning and development tool
š it supports succession planning
My 5 top tips to delegating successfully are:
ā delegate something specific - a task, a project, some research ...
ā ensure they are clear on what you are delegating
ā explain clearly what you want the outcome to be
ā give them the TIME to complete it - remember it may be extra to their role
ā support them, coach them, give them feedback on what they are doing
Remember, as long as it is done, it doesn't matter how they do it. Yes, they may do it completely differently to you, but as long as the outcome is the same, does it really matter?
What do you delegate? Start small, for example, can you ask them to compile some research or gather some feedback? Can they report this back to you so informal decisions can be made?
ā stage 1 - do as I say
ā stage 2 - research and report
ā stage 3 - research and recommend
ā stage 4 - decide and inform
ā stage 5 - act independently

Don't be scared of delegating as it is so important for you and your team!
